What are palpitations?
These are heartbeats that suddenly become more noticeable. The heart may feel like it's pounding, or beating irregularly for a few seconds or minutes. You may also have these feelings in your throat or neck.
What causes them?
Palpitations may be triggered by adrenaline, a hormone released by the body after overexertion or when you feel nervous, anxious or excited. They can sometimes be the result of hormonal changes during a woman's periods, during pregnancy, or around the time of the menopause.
Should I be concerned?
Palpitations are usually temporary and not a cause for concern. In most cases they are harmless and are not a sign of a problem with your heart, but they may seem a little alarming. However, if the palpitations are accompanied by other symptoms, such as dizziness or tightness in your chest, you should visit your Doctor.
